Environmental Stewardship
Old North Church has been certified as a Green Congregation by the Southern New England Conference of the United Church of Christ. We have done this by taking the steps to integrate care of God’s Creation into our ministries through worship and education; in the operations of our facilities; in community outreach and partnerships; and communicating ways to live sustainably to our congregation.
Some of the tangible steps that we’ve taken are:
-
Putting in a waste station to collect recyclable and compostable materials
-
Switching to reusable glasses and cups for our coffee hour
-
Hosting our State Representative along with a member of the Green Marblehead Committee and an elected board member from our Light Department. They gave us updates on how climate change is being addressed at the state and local levels
-
Sermons on the importance of environmental protection and sustainability
-
Ringing our bell on the 11th day every month to sound the alarm that we are in the 11th hour in our battle with climate change
-
Educating our children on Creation Care and environmental justice
Creating a pollinator garden near our church office
Our Green Team meets monthly and welcomes new members.
