Senior Choir
The Old North Senior Choir is comprised of an enthusiastic group of volunteers – from high school aged participants and beyond – and is led by four professional section leaders. Currently there are forty (40) members who sing on a regular basis. The Choir is directed and accompanied by Maria vanKalken, Minister of Music. Participation in the Senior Choir does not require an audition; further, it is not necessary to be a member of Old North Church in order to join.
Prior singing experience is helpful, as all as sight-reading skills, but not required.
The Senior Choir sings at the 10am worship service, preceded by a 9am warm up rehearsal. The Choir provides an anthem, offertory, choral responses, and leads the congregation in hymn singing. The repertoire covers many centuries and styles of sacred choral music and is often enhanced by guest instrumentalists.
The Senior Choir is off once per month when the Youth and Bell Choirs are scheduled to provide music. The Choir participates in several special services throughout the year including, Service of Remembrance, Bell Sunday, Lessons and Carols on Christmas Eve, a Lenten Choral Concert on Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Easter Sunday (2 services), and Music Sunday.
Most members of the Senior Choir participate in the Old North Festival Chorus Christmas and Lenten Concerts. When Festival Chorus rehearsals are in session, the Senior Choir rehearses only on Sunday mornings and on an “as needed” basis.
Old North’s four soloists provide leadership and regularly perform solos with the Senior Choir and during annual Festival Chorus Christmas Concerts. Please refer to the “Old North Festival Chorus” section to read their bios.
