  Music

Music plays a very important role in the life of Old North Church. Under the direction of Maria van Kalken, Minister of Music, we have a rich and varied choral and instrumental program for adults and children. We invite the greater community to share our musical experiences.

Choirs
The Senior Choir is an integral part of the 10 o’clock service, except during the summer months. Musical selections include hymns, American classics, and contemporary composers. Our high school youth sing in the High School Chamber Singers.

The Cecelia Choir is composed of boys and girls from the first through the third grades. The Parish Singers are children from fourth through eighth grade. All share their talents and joys during selected 10 o’clock services.

Bell Choirs
The Bell Choir was formed in 1999. A Children’s Bell Choir was formed three years later. Playing together or separately, they frequently contribute to the 10 o’clock service.

Individual instrumentalist are frequently invited to participate in our services. They enrich us with their string, wind, and keyboard instruments.

Evensong
Old North prepares a very special program of music during the Lenten Season. Evensong is held in the church sanctuary in the evening.

Festival Chorus
Each year, the Old North Festival Chorus presents two beautiful Christmas Concerts during the Christmas Walk weekend (first weekend in December), as a gift to the Marblehead community.

The Festival Chorus gathers Old North’s Senior Choir together with enthusiastic singers—amateur to professional—from many neighboring communities and churches in Marblehead.

The Old North Festival Orchestra, soloists and one hundred-voice (100) Chorus will is led by Maria van Kalken. In addition to a selection of carols of the season—some with audience participation—the Concerts feature a special appearance by The Parrish Singers and other young singers from the community, directed by Rebecca Kenneally, as well as an appearance by the Old North Bell Choir, directed by Sandra Barrett.

The Festival Chorus & Orchestra has been lauded for its outstanding performances of major choral works each year.
